One Intern’s Crash Course in the World of Advertising

Home > Blog > One Intern’s Crash Course in the World of Advertising

June 16, 2017  |  By Natalie Spindle

A few short weeks ago Ben Kunz, senior vice president of marketing and content at Mediassociates, came to Brunet-García’s Jacksonville, Florida, office for a strategic session and gifted us with his son for a brief internship.

Justin and Ben Kunz visit the St. Johns River in Jacksonville.

Mediassociates is a valued partner and member of the B|G Public Health Team, and we were expecting great things from young Justin Kunz. He has truly been an asset to our agency during the past month, and we felt he needed a spot on the B|G blog to memorialize his experience with us. I sat down with Justin to find out more about what he has been up to and his future plans.

Tell us a little bit more about yourself, where you’re attending school, where you’re from, the basics.

I live in Cheshire, Connecticut—a town about 30 minutes from New Haven. I am a rising junior at Colgate University, where I major in political science and minor in writing/rhetoric. At school, I’m involved with student government as the vice president of the class of 2019, and I work for the Office of Communications as a student photographer.

How did you come to find yourself at Brunet-García this summer?

I’ve always been interested in marketing and advertising, and I was fortunate to have my father help connect me with Brunet-García. I loved the agency’s work with the government, especially the “100 Plates” project. Brunet-García’s deep focus on helping the community is truly inspiring.

What piqued your interest in the marketing and advertising world?

At a young age, both of my parents got me interested in photography. I think that my love for taking photos has evolved into an appreciation for visual communication and marketing. I’m fascinated by how we can use images and videos to target certain audiences, and I always wanted to learn more about the business side of this interaction.

What have you been working on during your time with our agency?

I’ve been able to work on a wide variety of projects here, including client research, business solicitation research, a creative brief, and a website blog post. I’ve also had the opportunity to be a part of client meetings and Brunet-García team conferences.

Looking back, what is the biggest lesson or experience you will hold onto from your time here?

The biggest lesson I learned in my time here is that successful business relies on cohesiveness and flexibility. The Brunet-García team is fluid and adaptable; every person works hard in his or her department but is able to work well with other areas of the business to solve complex problems. I admired this, and I hope to work in a similar work environment one day, where success is a collective team effort.

Have we scared you out of being in The Industry?

Not at all! I’m more excited than ever to continue learning about the marketing industry and to improve skills that will help me succeed in this area.

During your time in Jacksonville, have you been able to get out and explore? What have you enjoyed most about the city?

The highlight of my time in Jacksonville was definitely my trip to Little Talbot Island. I went during my first weekend here and was one of the only people on the beach in the afternoon. It really is a beautiful place. I’ve also spent a lot of time on the Riverwalk downtown; I’ve enjoyed hanging out by the water, whether going for a run or just relaxing.

Any other big plans for the summer?

My family and I will be traveling to Switzerland for two weeks in July. We’re really excited to take in the landscape and culture abroad. Besides that, I plan on spending time in Cheshire with friends and family, and of course with our two golden retrievers.

What’s next for you in your pursuit of higher education?

I’m looking forward to my junior and senior years at Colgate. After I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in marketing or consulting.
